Google tests “Genesis”, an AI tool that can write news articles

Google is currently developing a new AI tool called “Genesis” that has the capability to write news articles. This tool is being pitched to various news organizations and has already been demonstrated to The New York Times, as well as executives from News Corp., the owner of The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post, according to sources.

Genesis has the ability to generate written content on any given topic using provided data, regardless of whether it pertains to current events or other forms of information. Google envisions Genesis as a potential personal assistant for journalists, automating certain tasks and freeing up their time to focus on other responsibilities.

However, Google is clear in stating that the tool is not intended to replace the essential role of journalists. A company spokesperson emphasized that while Google sees Genesis as a responsible tool that can help address challenges associated with generative AI in the publishing industry, those who have witnessed the tool hold a different opinion. Some executives found the tool unsettling, feeling that it failed to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that journalists put into creating accurate and well-crafted news articles.

Google’s spokesperson, Jenn Crider, noted that the company is considering offering AI-powered tools to aid journalists in their work, particularly for smaller publishers. However, she stressed that these tools are not intended to supplant the crucial role of journalists in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles. Rather, they could provide alternative options for headlines and writing styles.

This is not the first time news organizations have explored the use of AI. In recent months, some organizations have faced criticism for AI-written articles that contained errors and mistakes, leading to public apologies. For instance, the Associated Press has utilized AI for articles on corporate earnings reports but still relies on human journalists. Although they have partnered with OpenAI for access to generative AI technology, they have yet to disclose their specific plans for implementation.

As Google’s Genesis remains in the testing phase, it remains to be seen whether it will fulfill its potential as an aid for journalists, aligning with Google’s intentions, or if it will present challenges and controversies in its use.
